I want to start off by thanking Birch Hills Staff for a great job. The course was in great shape. The flag placements were in the toughest spots possible and challenged every team today. The food, drinks and service was great. The set up for carts, range balls, putting contest, check-in and scores table was well organized. Special thanks to Brad Webster for taking charge on the "Company" side of the fence this year instead of the "members" side. I think this was Brad's first year not playing in the member guest in 10 years but his help made things run very smoothly.
Ok, now to the action. Hole # 10 was the toughest hole today, with only 2 birdies and 6 pars all day (yes this was a scramble format) Team Chavez almost took down the $10,000 hole in one money but settled for a birdie. Team Mullican got the other birdie to push the hole. Hole # 11 was the only hole on the day that was not birdied. Hole # 6 was the toughest par 4 with only Team Bouzos & Team McClary making birdies. Jim Mansfield wins Member long drive on that hole as Eron Campuzano wins Guest Long drive. Hole # 9 and # 17 were the only holes that played under par today. There were 9 birdies on # 9 and 9 birdies on # 17 but don't forget the only eagle of the day, it came on #17 with Mike Goldberg's drive and Sophie Kim's 68 foot 5 inch putt ( wait..... my tape measure only goes 50 feet lol) that paid them $350.00 for that gross skin. The only other gross skin on the day was on hole # 16 by Jeff Joyce and Sam Ridge which also paid $350 and how did they make birdie, well, Jeff Joyce with all his birch knowledge hit his tee shot in the left front bunker and his partner Sam calmly hits a 20 yard bunker shot in the hole for a 2!!....NICE tee shots on the green are overrated . The Members were a little stingy today with only 3 guest winning the contest holes. Already mentioned Eron's Long Drive and Sophie's Long Putt, the only guest to win a closest too was Mike Chapman on hole # 14. The member's who took down closest too's were Rick Walker (#1), Fermin Andres (#2 & #8), Jason Bouzos (#4), Dan La Rue (#5), Jeff Joyce (#7) and winning the Bryan Coll $100.00 hole was Duke Forbes.
Defending Champs Gary Mullican & Jayce Igarashi did it again after going -9 last year their -6 was good enough to take first place gross and for the first time in over 10 years they are the first team to also win 1st place in the gross derby, But it took some smart thinking by Jayce on hole # 17, instead of trying to take a tough shot behind a tree, he decided to take an unplayable lie (1 stroke penalty) take his 2 club lengths, which still left him in the dirt but he hit a great shot pin high just off the green right of the flag and then made a clutch 5 footer to have their team advance to the 18th hole as they were the only team to make par on 18 for the win. Jim Mansfield & Bart Hakeman (2-time champs) had to settle for 2nd place in tourney and were the first team out of the derby as Jim couldn't hit the flop shot or make a 5 foot putt. Last Minute replacement Jason "TPC" Bouzos & Casta Del Sol guest Daniel Mamaradlo played solid to take down 3rd place in the tourney and 2nd place in the derby winning $110 cash each. Bill McClary & Ralph Terrazas take 4th place winning the tie breaker over Bob Lindner & Barrett Jackson who both shot -1 (58). But it was Bill & Ralph that outlasted Bobby & Barrett to take down 3rd in derby. On the Net side Grumpy Old Man Tom Watson & young gun Eron Campuzano shot the low net of the day (46) and take down 1st net in tourney but when Eron says I already promised to pick to my kids and their friends at 130, tommy begged him to stay as long as possible Eron said ok and got tommy all the way to hole # 18 but then said "happy wife, happy life" So they had to settle for 3rd place not able to get a replacement player and forfeit 1st or 2nd place $. (Rules, Rules Rules) Dan La Rue & Ed Bevill said that's fine with us as they take 2nd place in regular tourney and 2nd place in the derby. Dean Burdett and Mike Chapman win the net side of the derby and took 3rd place in the tourney winning the tie breaker over 4th place net finishers Rodger Campuzano and Son Eric who both shot net 49. Ray Coats & son Chris took 5th place in the tourney and were just out of the money getting eliminated on a chip off on # 17.
That should do it for this years 2017 Member Guest ... Mully is already doing a Pat Riley and guaranteeing a 3-pete for next year.... Bob LIndner will be running next years Member Guest and I know he is already excepting sponsors, donations and sign ups even before I finish this write up...
